What affects the price you get
Two loads of the same metal can be worth quite different amounts. Four things decide where your load sits:
- Grade. Clean bare bright copper wire is worth considerably more per kilo than the same copper still inside its insulation.
- Contamination. Brass fittings left on copper pipe, steel screws through aluminium, rubber, plastic and dirt all pull the rate down.
- Quantity. Larger, sorted loads cost less per tonne to handle, and that shows up in the rate we can pay.
- The market. Scrap follows global commodity prices. Rates move week to week, sometimes day to day.

How scrap metal prices are calculated
The arithmetic is simple: weight multiplied by the rate for that grade. Everything interesting happens before the weighing — in how the metal is identified, sorted and prepared.
Your load is weighed on a certified scale. If you bring it to a yard, the truck is weighed loaded and empty and the difference is your net weight. On a pickup, the load is weighed at the facility and you are paid against that docket.
Ferrous and non-ferrous metals
Ferrous metals contain iron — steel, cast iron, structural sections. They are heavy, magnetic, and priced per tonne rather than per kilo because the value density is low.
Non-ferrous metals contain no iron — copper, brass, aluminium, lead, stainless. They are not magnetic, they do not rust the way steel does, and they are worth substantially more per kilogram. A fridge-sized pile of steel and a bucket of copper offcuts can be worth about the same.
A magnet is the quickest test you can do at home. If it sticks, it is ferrous. Our guide on ferrous vs non-ferrous metals goes through the differences properly.
Why grade matters so much
Grade describes how pure and how clean the metal is. Copper is the clearest example: bright, unalloyed wire with no coating sits at the top, copper with solder or paint sits lower, and insulated cable is priced on the copper it will yield once stripped rather than on its total weight.
Clean and sorted metal is worth more
Anything we have to separate, cut off or dispose of is handling we pay for. If you can pull the brass fittings off copper pipe, keep aluminium away from steel, and cut cable free of its fittings, you move up a grade and get paid more.
Mixed loads are still welcome — plenty of customers have no way to sort a shed clean-out, and we handle that every day. Sorting is worth doing where you can, not something to worry about where you cannot.
Ferrous
Steel, cast iron, structural sections, appliances, fencing. Magnetic. Lower rate per kilo, but the weights are large.
Non-ferrous
Copper, brass, aluminium, lead, stainless. Not magnetic. Higher rate per kilo — worth sorting carefully.
Questions
Scrap Metal Prices — FAQs
Are these prices guaranteed?
No — they are indicative. Scrap follows global commodity markets, and the final figure depends on the grade and condition of your particular load once it is weighed. We confirm the rate with you before we take anything away.
How often do the rates change?
We update them as the market moves. The date under the calculator shows when the rates on this page were last changed.
Do you pay cash or by transfer?
Either. Most household pickups settle by bank transfer on the day; commercial loads are paid by EFT against a weighbridge docket.
Is there a minimum quantity?
For a free pickup we generally look for around a trailer load, or a smaller amount of higher-value metal such as copper or brass. If you are not sure, send a photo and we will tell you honestly.
Do I need to sort the metal first?
It helps and it usually pays, but it is not required. Sorted, clean metal earns a better rate; mixed loads are still collected.
